about

Title track from the Black Trees album, due out August 27, 2013. Written by Julie Kathryn.

A wistful song about the demise of a relationship and the haunting memories that followed. Sonically, the song has a warm and vintage-y feel. The chorus features catchy harmonies and major chords, but the narrative is one of sadness and loss. This tension -- between happiness and emotional pain -- gives the song a bittersweet, melancholic quality. Vivid images (“black trees” “silver moon”) are used to paint a picture of a relationship entering its twilight before it’s even begun.

lyrics

I met you on the fourth of July
Wondering why you were alone
Firecrackers lit up the sky, you looked in my eyes
our sadness collided

Like a waking dream, you’re everything I believe
Your memory hangs between this world and me
Like a waking dream, you’re in everything I see

I see…
Black trees on a pale sky
You and I are dancing eye to eye
Black trees and a silver moon
Night had just begun and morning came too soon

You were born of my deepest truth
In my fading youth I loved you so much
You are burned on walls of my eyes
Every word that I write, every day every night

Like a waking dream, you’re everything I believe
Your memory hangs between this world and me
Like a waking dream, you’re in everything I see

I see…
Black trees on a pale sky
You and I are dancing eye to eye
Black trees and a silver moon
Night had just begun and morning came too soon

I see…
Black trees on a pale sky
You and I are dancing eye to eye
Black trees and a silver moon
Night had just begun and morning came too soon
I see…
Black trees on a pale sky
You and I are dancing eye to eye
Black trees and a silver moon
Night had just begun and morning came too soon.
